NELFUND Moves Against Universities Withholding Student Loan Refunds
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund has issued a public notice against tertiary institutions delaying or refusing to refund students who paid tuition before NELFUND disbursement. It also condemned arbitrary fee increases that contradict the scheme’s objectives. The Fund warned that withholding refunds imposes additional financial burdens on students. It noted reports of some schools charging extra fees despite receiving payments from the government loan programme. To resolve the issue, NELFUND is engaging affected institutions and relevant authorities. The aim is to ensure eligible students receive timely refunds and that institutional charges remain fair and transparent. The student loan scheme, launched under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, pays tuition directly to public tertiary institutions and provides interest-free upkeep allowances. Beneficiaries have complained about delays in refunds and non-compliance by some schools.
