Lagos Taskforce Arrests Five “Omotaku” for Extorting Motorists

Lagos Taskforce Arrests Five “Omotaku” for Extorting Motorists

Operatives of the Lagos State Taskforce arrested five suspected street hawkers, known locally as Omotaku, along the Aboru-Abule-Egba axis of the Abeokuta Expressway. The suspects — Alade Olarewaju (25), Oluwadamilare Alabi (38), Sunday Idowu (32), Rabiu Ibrahim (29) and Raji Yusuf (23) — were detained on Monday, March 23 after a tip-off through the agency’s hotline. Authorities say the group targeted motorists whose vehicles broke down. They posed as helpers, then harassed and demanded money. A vigilant driver about to be extorted alerted the Taskforce and officers quickly moved in to make the arrests. At a briefing, CSP Adetayo Akerele confirmed the suspects had long been under surveillance following multiple complaints. He stated they face a three-count charge of illegal fee collection, obstruction of motorists and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace. Residents are urged to report suspicious activity through official channels.

What impact do you think these arrests of five Omotaku hawkers will have on motorists' safety along the Abeokuta Expressway?

Haha, I'm all in on that. This crackdown should boost confidence for drivers cruising down Abeokuta Expressway.

I see your point, but rounding up only five may barely affect long-term safety without broader traffic enforcement.

It feels like rounding up five hawkers is just a drop in the bucket of a much bigger problem on that route.

Abeg, arresting only five Omotaku won't stop motorists from being extorted along those busy roads.

Setting up official roadside stalls and clear identification for authorized hawkers could reduce extortion and keep traffic flowing.
