Katsina Governor Bans Jerrycans, Shuts POS and Phone-Charging Centres to Curb Banditry

Katsina Governor Bans Jerrycans, Shuts POS and Phone-Charging Centres to Curb Banditry

The Katsina State Governor has issued an Executive Order banning the sale, purchase, transport and storage of petroleum products in jerrycans across the state. In a bid to cut off supplies to criminal hideouts, the order also mandates the immediate closure of all POS outlets and commercial phone-charging centres in Matazu and Musawa Local Government Areas. Motorcycle use is similarly prohibited in those two LGAs after intelligence reports linked these services to bandit networks. The Governor says these measures aim to protect lives and property by disrupting the logistics of forest-based gangs. He warns that anyone caught violating the directives will face strict sanctions and pledges ongoing collaboration with security agencies to restore lasting peace in Katsina.

Shutting POS stalls and phone charging centres with jerrycan ban risks hurting ordinary residents more than it stops well-resourced bandits.

I'm not convinced these sweeping bans will be effective; criminals often find alternative routes while locals suffer unnecessary restrictions.

Local communities could organise approved fuel depots and mobile charging stations under state supervision to maintain services while meeting security directives.
