Illiyasu Zakari Elected ALGON National President, Outlines Priorities for Local Governance

The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria has elected Illiyasu Zakari, Chairman of Agwara Local Government Council in Niger State, as its National President. He immediately led a delegation of the Board of Trustees and ALGON officials to meet the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, to reaffirm his mandate and discuss the association’s priorities. Zakari pledged to reposition ALGON as a leading platform for effective local administration, inclusive development, and improved service delivery at the grassroots. He emphasized the vital role of local governments in national development and promised to align ALGON’s activities with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to benefit communities across Nigeria. The delegation explored ways to foster stronger synergy between the Federal Government and local council authorities. Senator Akume praised ALGON’s role in deepening democratic governance and assured the association of continued federal support for initiatives that enhance accountability and sustainable development at the local level.

It's interesting that his first move was meeting the Secretary to the Government rather than touring local councils for on-the-ground feedback.
