Cook Jailed 20 Years for Raping 3-Year-Old at Creche
A South African court has sentenced 24-year-old cook Vuyisane Makeleni to 20 years in prison for raping a 3-year-old girl at the creche where he worked. The Bloemfontein Sexual Offences Court found him guilty after medical exams confirmed genital injuries. On May 9, 2024, Makeleni accompanied the victim to the toilets and committed the assault. He then threatened her into silence. The child later told her mother, who alerted the police. Investigators discovered the unregistered creche and shut it down immediately. During sentencing, the National Prosecuting Authority stressed that the accused betrayed the trust of both parents and the community. The court ordered his name added to the Sexual Offenders Register. The NPA reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on crimes against children and its commitment to a victim-centred, trauma-informed justice process.
