Dr. Idi Hong Urges Tougher Nigerian Response to South African Xenophobia

Former Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Idi Hong has called on Nigeria to end its policy of diplomatic restraint and adopt reciprocal measures against South Africa over recurring xenophobic attacks on Nigerians. Speaking on NTA’s Insight programme, he condemned South Africa’s failure to protect foreign nationals, highlighting repeated incidents of violence, looting and destruction of Nigerian businesses without proper compensation or accountability. Hong argued that Nigeria should leverage its economic importance—pointing out that over 120 South African companies operate here and repatriate billions annually—to secure fair treatment. He insisted that all legitimate diplomatic and economic instruments be deployed until adequate protection for Nigerians in South Africa is guaranteed.
