Senate Approves ₦50,000 Fine for Hawking and Preaching in Commercial Buses

Senate Approves ₦50,000 Fine for Hawking and Preaching in Commercial Buses

The Senate has passed amendments to the Federal Road Safety Corps Act that impose a ₦50,000 fine on anyone trading, hawking or preaching to passengers inside commercial buses. The bill now awaits the president’s signature to become law. Drivers who refuse roadside breathalyzer tests could face a ₦50,000 fine, six months’ imprisonment, or both. Fines for operating a vehicle under the influence have risen from ₦5,000 to ₦100,000, with up to two years in prison for serious offenses. Speeding, reckless driving and ignoring traffic signals now carry maximum penalties of ₦100,000 and potential jail terms. The revised legislation outlines 52 traffic offenses with sharply increased fines and custodial sentences. Lawmakers say these tougher sanctions aim to curb dangerous road habits, reduce accidents and boost compliance with traffic regulations across the country.

It seems lawmakers want to cut distractions, but enforcing a huge fine inside moving buses sounds unrealistic.
