West Nile Virus Cases Rise to 65 in Greece as Six Die

Greece has recorded 65 locally acquired West Nile virus infections since the start of its 2026 transmission season, with six deaths confirmed. Health authorities said 23 cases were reported in the past week. Of those infected, 54 developed serious central nervous system complications, including encephalitis, meningitis and acute flaccid paralysis. All six deaths involved people over 65 who developed severe complications. Cases have been detected in 25 municipalities across Attica, Thessaly and Central Macedonia, with Attica recording the highest number. West Nile virus is spread by mosquitoes and typically circulates in Greece between May and November.
