Goodluck Jonathan’s 2027 Bid: Courts Have Cleared Him in 2013, 2015 and 2022
As debates heat up over the 2027 presidential race, a new suit in Abuja challenges former President Goodluck Jonathan’s eligibility. Lawyers argue his 2010 succession oath and 2011 election oath already count as two terms. Earlier rulings in 2013 and on appeal in 2015 held that only elections trigger the two-term limit, not constitutional succession. A 2018 amendment then added a clause limiting a successor to one elected term, prompting a fresh 2022 challenge in Bayelsa. Jonathan’s defence maintains these changes cannot apply retroactively and that courts have long settled the issue. The latest case will determine whether his name can appear on the 2027 ballot.
