Federal High Court Dismisses Adeleke’s Joinder in Party Deregistration Case
A Federal High Court in Abuja on 20 May 2026 rejected applications by Governor Ademola Adeleke and others seeking to join a suit that aims to deregister several political parties over alleged constitutional breaches. Justice Peter Lifu ruled that the parties themselves are already defendants, making individual joinder unnecessary. He also refused to stay proceedings, noting that halting the case now could harm other litigants and affect the timely submission of election candidates. The substantive suit, filed by the National Forum of Former Legislators against INEC and parties including Accord, ADC, APP and ZLP, argues the defendants failed to meet constitutional requirements. Judgment is reserved for 5 June 2026. The board of trustees said the case seeks to strengthen electoral jurisprudence and promote a credible political system.
