DSS Warns of Planned Terrorist Attacks and Abductions at Sokoto Tertiary Institutions
The Department of State Services has warned of a possible terrorist attack and abduction plot targeting tertiary institutions across Sokoto State. In a July 18, 2026 security alert to the state government, the DSS said criminal groups may be shifting their focus from primary and secondary schools to universities and other higher institutions. Students, lecturers, non-academic staff and their relatives could be at risk. The agency urged the state government and security agencies to strengthen surveillance, intelligence gathering and rapid-response measures around campuses. It warned that a successful attack could disrupt academic activities, spread fear and further undermine confidence in school security. Sokoto has faced repeated bandit attacks in recent years, including the March 2024 abduction of 17 Tsangaya students and a woman in Gada Local Government Area. The victims were later rescued by the Nigerian Army.
