RIRS Urges Rivers’ 23 LGAs to Adopt Digital Revenue Collection and End Multiple Taxation
The Rivers State Internal Revenue Service has urged the chairmen of the state’s 23 local government areas to adopt digital, cashless revenue systems and end unauthorised levies. Speaking at an ALGON capacity-building workshop in Port Harcourt, RIRS Chairman Israel Egbunefu said integrated digital payment platforms would improve transparency, reduce leakages and make it easier for businesses and residents to pay approved taxes. He warned that multiple taxation and illegal collections discourage investment and weaken compliance. He called for closer cooperation between RIRS and local councils, as well as steps to domesticate the new tax law in Rivers State. The workshop also focused on improving grassroots governance, including stronger oversight of primary healthcare facilities and more effective use of local government resources.
