NSC Chairman Calls for School Football Revival to Honour Henry Nwosu
Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, has urged the revival of school football competitions nationwide as the best way to immortalise late Green Eagles legend Henry Nwosu. Speaking at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, Dikko highlighted Nwosu’s rise from school sports star to Africa Cup of Nations winner in 1980. He proposed naming a national schools tournament after the football icon and pledged the commission’s support for burial activities alongside Imo State authorities. Family members and sports stakeholders also appealed for a befitting state burial. They recommended draping the casket with the national flag, observing a minute’s silence and using national symbols to honour his legacy. Earlier proposals from Imo State Concerned Sports Stakeholders called for programmes and projects in Nwosu’s name to inspire young talents. The late winger will be laid to rest on June 6, 2026, in his hometown of Naze, Imo State.
