South African Police Debunk Fake Tweet Targeting Nigerians Amid Rising Xenophobia
The South African Police Service has dismissed a viral social media post that claimed two Nigerian nationals and an officer were arrested with female corpses allegedly used to smuggle narcotics. SAPS labelled the story as false and urged anyone who has seen or shared it to ignore and delete the report. The fake tweet surfaced amid violent xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals—particularly black Africans—in cities like Durban. Videos circulating online show mobs threatening and attacking Ghanaians and Nigerians, demanding they leave the country under threats of violence. SAPS has warned that spreading such misinformation only fuels hatred. The South African Ministry of Police also condemned all xenophobic acts, affirming that violence, looting, and intimidation will not be tolerated. It called on communities, civil society, and law enforcement to work together to prevent further violence and promote dialogue.
