Heatwave Warning Signs: How Extreme Heat Affects Your Body and How to Stay Safe

Extreme heat can do more than cause discomfort. It can overwhelm the body’s cooling system, leading to dehydration, heat exhaustion and, in severe cases, life-threatening heatstroke. Early warning signs include intense thirst, dry mouth, reduced urination, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, heavy sweating and a fast heartbeat. Older adults, infants, people living with chronic illnesses and outdoor workers face a higher risk. Reduce exposure during the hottest hours, drink fluids regularly, rest in shaded or cool places, take cool showers and avoid strenuous activity. Seek urgent medical help for confusion, fainting, persistent vomiting, very high body temperature, severe weakness or hot skin with little or no sweating.
