South Africa’s Win Sees Three African Nations Reach 2026 World Cup Round of 32

South Africa’s Win Sees Three African Nations Reach 2026 World Cup Round of 32 — 1 of 3
1 / 3

South Africa’s 1-0 victory over South Korea booked Bafana Bafana a place in the World Cup knockout stage for the first time. That result means three African sides—South Africa, Morocco and Egypt—have already secured spots in the round of 32, with six more still fighting for qualification on the final group matchday. Morocco topped their group unbeaten after reaching the semi-finals in Qatar, while Egypt also impressed in the opening rounds. South Africa’s historic feat was sealed by Thapelo Maseko’s strike in the 63rd minute. Ivory Coast need just a point against Curaçao to advance, while Algeria require a draw with Austria. Ghana can still qualify as one of the best third-placed teams, and Cape Verde will progress with a win in their final group game. DR Congo and Senegal face must-win fixtures and must rely on other results. Tunisia has already bowed out of the tournament.

Sure, their group was lighter, but credit the team for staying focused and getting results.

Beating South Korea is promising, but expecting the same performance against top European or South American teams might be overly optimistic.

African teams should analyze their defensive lapses from the group stage now and focus training on set-piece discipline before the knockout rounds.
