My Encounter With a Family Caring for a Mother Living With Dementia

I recently visited the family of a friend and met her mother, “Mama Cee,” who is living with dementia. Once a successful businesswoman and a strong presence in her family, she now struggles to recognise her loved ones and needs full-time care. Dementia is a group of conditions that gradually affects memory, reasoning and the ability to carry out everyday tasks. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form, but vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia and other conditions can also cause cognitive decline. The visit was a reminder that dementia can place enormous emotional, physical and financial pressure on families. Healthy habits such as managing blood pressure and diabetes, exercising, eating well, staying socially active, getting quality sleep and treating hearing loss may help reduce risk. Families caring for loved ones with dementia also need practical support. A trained female caregiver is being sought to assist Mama Cee and ease the burden on her family.

Families may benefit from sharing care duties, keeping routines simple, and discussing support needs early rather than waiting for a crisis.
