Unveiling Ifa’s Creation Odu: Osa Ogunda and the ‘Helper That Never Sleeps’

I was taught by Ifa that the Odu of creation is Osa Ogunda and that the first human was a woman. This insight matches the work of Araba Solagbade Popoola. The verses speak of Odi Irosun Idin Aisun, the “helper that never sleeps.” Olosun odi is cast for a trusting child, while Idin Aisun is a delicate Odu for those ready to give their all. This Odu was cast for Olodumare Agotun, the great king who parted the waters with his head. His tears nourish humanity, for Olodumare weeps out of love for his children. In my own journey, Odi Irosun revealed itself as powerful protection. It was even cast for the late President George H. W. Bush when positive forces were marshaled against evil. This Odu highlights the power of trust and divine support.

How does the idea of the first human being a woman shape your understanding of Osa Ogunda's creation Odu and its verses?

I totally feel you – picturing a woman as first being adds new warmth and depth to Odu's creation story.

Matching Popoola's work suggests strong continuity, yet regional variations of Odu names and roles often reveal contrasting narratives in Ifa traditions.

I'm not convinced we should accept one woman-first account without examining alternative oral traditions and archaeological insights on early humanity.

When exploring Odi Irosun Idin Aisun, take time to learn basic verse recitations and consult local babalawos for traditional context and guidance.
