LWJII Threatens Contempt Action Against Rivers Police for Defying High Court Ruling
A Port Harcourt human rights group says a senior Rivers State police officer ignored a May 7 High Court judgment that lifted a lien on Mr. Loveday Johnson’s bank account and barred further arrest. Barrister Woy Idigholimi of Lawyers Watch for Justice International Initiative (LWJII) calls the officer’s alleged re-arrest of Johnson on June 1 a flagrant contempt of court. The group plans to file contempt proceedings against CSP Appat Abraham and the Rivers State Police Command. They will also pursue other legal remedies to enforce Johnson’s constitutional rights to personal liberty, freedom of movement, and human dignity. ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, the state police public relations officer, says the command has not been served with the judgment and insists no court documents were received. LWJII rejects this and vows to hold the force accountable.
