Estimated Cost and Revenue Model for a 1,000-Head Cattle Ranch Without Pasture Land

Here is a proposed financial model for a 1,000-head cattle ranch that operates without owning pasture land. The plan combines 500 beef calves at ₦200,000 each and 500 dairy cows at ₦500,000 each, putting livestock acquisition at about ₦350 million. A feedlot for 1,000 cattle on eight hectares of agricultural land in Southern Nigeria is estimated at ₦150 million. Land value, based on long-term plantation income, is estimated at up to ₦240 million in the South and about ₦80 million in the North. With ₦10 million for miscellaneous costs, total start-up capital is projected at roughly ₦750 million in Southern Nigeria and ₦680 million in Northern Nigeria. The model assumes the cattle will consume about 300 tonnes of hay monthly. At an estimated maximum of $120 per tonne, monthly feed costs could be around $36,000. Beef and dairy sales are projected to generate more than $80,000 monthly on average, potentially exceeding $100,000. The landowner could receive equity in exchange for land, estimated at 20% in the South and 12% in the North. Staff salaries, veterinary care and other operating costs must also be included. Hay production should be treated as a separate business rather than an activity the ranch must fully handle itself.
