Ebola Watch: PSN Directs Pharmacies Nationwide to Step Up Surveillance
The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria has placed all pharmacies and pharmacists on high alert after fresh Ebola cases emerged in Central and East Africa. In a nationwide advisory, PSN leadership ordered pharmacies in every state and the FCT to strengthen infection prevention, surveillance and emergency response protocols. Pharmacies are often the first stop for sick patients, making pharmacists critical frontline defenders against a potential outbreak. Staff must monitor symptoms like sudden high fever, headache, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhea, rashes or unexplained bleeding. Pharmacies should also screen for recent travel to affected regions or contact with travelers in the last 21 days. Strict measures are now required: handwashing stations and sanitizers at entrances, use of gloves and masks by frontline staff, regular disinfection of surfaces, and suspension of non-essential blood tests on unexplained fevers. Any suspected case must be isolated and reported immediately to health authorities and the NCDC.
