Game of Thrones Star Michael Patrick Dies at 35 After Battling Motor Neurone Disease
Award-winning Irish actor Michael Patrick Campbell, known for roles in Game of Thrones and various stage productions, has died aged 35. He was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in February 2023 and went on to adapt Shakespeare’s Richard III, portraying the titular character in a wheelchair and winning a Stage Award for his performance. His wife, Naomi, announced that he passed away peacefully at the Northern Ireland Hospice, surrounded by family and friends. She shared their heartbreak and remembered his boundless joy, spirit and laughter. She concluded with a quote from Irish poet Brendan Behan: “Eat. Drink. Love. So don’t overthink it.” Patrick made his TV debut as a Wildling rioter in Game of Thrones in 2016. He later appeared in The Spectacular, BBC One’s Blue Lights, Steven Knight’s This Town and BBC Three’s My Left Nut, which he also co-wrote. In 2024, his lead role in The Tragedy of Richard III at Belfast’s Lyric Theatre earned him the Judges’ Award. Paying tribute, the Lyric Theatre’s executive producer said the theatre community has lost a great artist who transformed life’s challenges into visceral, vibrant art.
