Rivers Police Probe Alleged Illegal Detention and N180,000 Extortion

Rivers State Police Command has launched an investigation after reports that an unnamed man was arrested at the Octopus Unit in Port Harcourt, physically assaulted and forced to pay N180,000 before his release. The Commissioner of Police in Rivers ordered an investigative panel to verify the claims. The panel will gather evidence and hear from witnesses, while the command urges anyone with credible information to come forward through official channels. Police leadership reiterated that holding suspects beyond the constitutionally approved period without due process is unlawful. Officers found guilty of misconduct will face disciplinary action under relevant laws. A rights lawyer involved in the case also alleged that some detainees paid for bail only to be returned to cells. He called for regular inspections of police units to ensure compliance with human rights safeguards.
