Lagos Maps Informal Urban Spaces Under New SCRAMP Initiative

Lagos Maps Informal Urban Spaces Under New SCRAMP Initiative — 1 of 2
1 / 2

The Lagos State Government has kicked off the documentation phase of the Setbacks, Common Areas and Roadsides Administration and Monitoring Project (SCRAMP). The exercise will map over 1,700 informal urban spaces to curb illegal occupation and conversion of public land. Octragon Multi-Projects Ltd. and the Lagos State Informal Management Authority will identify, document and manage setbacks, common areas, roadsides and other informal spaces. Existing occupants can apply for licences or temporary occupancy under verified guidelines. This initiative follows the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law of 2019. It aims to ensure orderly development, protect infrastructure and improve environmental sustainability across the state.

How will this mapping of over 1,700 informal urban spaces truly help prevent illegal land occupation in Lagos?

Sounds promising! Mapping these spaces could really help us spot and secure vulnerable spots before anyone moves in.

Mapping projects often stall after the documentation phase, so I remain doubtful SCRAMP has enough resources to ensure proper enforcement.

Focusing solely on formal mapping might ignore community-led efforts already managing these spaces effectively.

Local neighbourhood committees could partner with SCRAMP teams, sharing insights and easing the workload of detailed land surveys.
