NNPC Boosts Dangote Refinery’s May Crude Allocation to Seven Cargoes

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited will allocate seven cargoes to the Dangote Refinery in May, up from five in previous months. A top NNPC source told TheCable that the increase aims to boost production under the crude-for-naira programme. Dangote CEO David Bird had said the plant needs 13 to 15 cargoes monthly but was only receiving five. According to a Reuters report, higher allocations may limit Nigerian crude exports. NNPC supplies are also cheaper due to lower shipping costs. Dangote has reduced its ex-gantry petrol price to ₦1,200 per litre. The refinery is negotiating with NNPC for even more volumes.

What impact might increasing crude allocation from five to seven cargoes have on refining capacity and consumer fuel prices?

True talk, boosting allocation to seven cargoes should ramp up output and ease prices a bit.

True oh, pumping two more cargos go boost throughput sharp, prices fit drop small if refinery run smooth.

Allocating extra cargoes sounds promising, but under the crude-for-naira programme it may not lead to more products hitting the pumps quickly.

We should question why the NNPC waited to raise allocation, especially when the refinery's underutilised capacity could have eased supply gaps earlier.

The NNPC and Dangote should ensure refined product distribution is ramped up alongside crude supply to avoid bottlenecks at depots and filling stations.
