UEFA Reportedly Threatens FIFA Boycott Over Proposed World Cup Rights Sale
European football associations have reportedly threatened to boycott FIFA competitions if FIFA President Gianni Infantino proceeds with plans to sell minority commercial stakes in a new company managing World Cup broadcasting, sponsorship, ticketing and licensing rights. UEFA’s 55 member associations reportedly rejected the proposal at an emergency meeting, arguing that the World Cup and other major tournaments should not be treated as investment products. FIFA is said to be seeking up to $4.2 billion through the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise, which could be valued at about $20 billion. A boycott would put major football nations such as England, Spain, France, Germany, Italy and Portugal at odds with FIFA. The 2027 Women’s World Cup could be the first major tournament affected. FIFA maintains that the investment would provide more funding for football development, especially in smaller countries.
