Chelle Names Benjamin Fredrick as Super Eagles’ New Centre-Back

Chelle Names Benjamin Fredrick as Super Eagles’ New Centre-Back — 1 of 6
1 / 6

Eric Chelle has settled the debate over Benjamin Fredrick’s best position for the Super Eagles. After bursting onto the scene at the 2025 Unity Cup and impressively marking top forwards like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Fredrick’s role was in question. The 21-year-old defender earned his call-up straight from Brentford’s B team. In a recent interview, the Malian coach listed Fredrick alongside Calvin Bassey and Semi Ajayi as his centre-back benchmarks. Despite missing AFCON 2025 due to a knee injury, the Nigeria international has resumed on-field training and is on track for a full recovery. By officially naming Fredrick a centre-back, Chelle has made it clear the young defender remains in his plans. His return promises to intensify competition and strengthen Nigeria’s defense ahead of AFCON 2027 qualifiers.

Do you think his Unity Cup performance against top forwards like Aubameyang signals readiness for regular centre-back duties?

Is a single Unity Cup outing against Aubameyang enough evidence he can handle regular centre-back duties?

He impressed at the 2025 Unity Cup, but a brief burst against Aubameyang doesn't guarantee long-term defensive stability.

I'm not convinced one standout tournament makes him a reliable centre-back. We need regular top-flight consistency.

He should get gradual game time alongside an experienced partner to build composure before leading the backline solo.
