Aguiyi-Ironsi Family Seeks Federal Government Apology, Compensation Over 1966 Assassination

The family of Nigeria’s first military Head of State, Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, has called on the Federal Government to issue an official apology, pay compensation and pursue reconciliation over his assassination in 1966. Speaking during a memorial marking 60 years since his death, family head Imo Aguiyi-Ironsi said the former leader was not involved in the January 1966 coup. He said Aguiyi-Ironsi accepted the leadership role as the most senior military officer after the coup. Aguiyi-Ironsi led Nigeria for about six months before he was killed in July 1966. His family says the government has yet to offer a sincere apology for his death.
