EFCC Halts Fake Power Transmission Project, Blacklists Contractor – Olukoyede

EFCC Halts Fake Power Transmission Project, Blacklists Contractor – Olukoyede

EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede has revealed that in 2024 the agency stopped a contractor hired by the Federal Ministry of Power from installing imported, substandard transmission lines. The intervention averted a potential national disaster and loss of lives. Olukoyede made the disclosure in Abuja during a courtesy visit from NEMSA’s Managing Director, Engr. Olusegun Adesayo. He confirmed the imported materials failed to meet required safety and technical standards. The EFCC chief pledged stronger collaboration with NEMSA to curb procurement fraud and ensure accountability in the power sector. He noted that the commission’s mandate extends to economic sabotage as well as financial crimes. Adesayo said NEMSA seeks EFCC support in intelligence sharing, detection of substandard materials, and capacity building. He assured that the agency is implementing reforms to align with the federal anti-corruption agenda.

Do we know how the EFCC uncovered these substandard transmission lines before installation? Details would help clarify the process.

Fair point, we really need more clarity on how EFCC traced those dodgy cables before installation.

It's striking that a contractor hired by the Ministry could import such low-quality materials without earlier quality checks being triggered.

Give EFCC credit, but shouldn't the Ministry of Power share responsibility for vetting contractors and preventing substandard bids?

The government should mandate independent third-party inspections on all imported power equipment to avoid similar national security risks.
