Sanwo-Olu Calls on Governors to Give Full Autonomy to State Revenue Agencies
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged his fellow governors to grant chairmen of State Internal Revenue Services independence, clear mandates and full tenure. He made the call while opening the 159th meeting of the Joint Revenue Board at Lagos House, stressing that autonomy will boost taxpayer confidence and revenue performance. Highlighting Lagos’s own success, he noted that the state generated ₦1.3 trillion in IGR in 2024—a 45% increase—financing over 60% of its budget. He credited this growth to digital tax systems, an expanded tax net and strong collaboration with taxpayers. He also pledged to share Lagos’s experiences on data alignment and compliance with other states. The Joint Revenue Board chairman praised reforms dating back to former Governor Tinubu, noting Lagos’s rise from under ₦94 billion IGR in 2007 to over ₦1.7 trillion in 2025. He pointed to infrastructure projects, agro-food hubs, school refurbishments and rail mass transit as examples of how strong revenue management delivers real development outcomes.
