Kano Police Smash ‘Aljannu’ Phone Scam, Arrest Two Suspects with 28 SIM Cards

Kano Police Smash ‘Aljannu’ Phone Scam, Arrest Two Suspects with 28 SIM Cards

Kano State Police have dismantled a fraud syndicate that posed as spirits on phone calls to extort money. Officers recovered 28 SIM cards linked to the operation. On April 10, the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Squad arrested Ahmad Ibrahim (24) and Isma’il Muhammad (22) from Dandinshe Quarters. The duo admitted using voice modulators and ritual threats to coerce over 500 victims into reciting incantations and handing over cash and valuables. In a separate operation, the Special Intervention Squad recovered a Daylong motorcycle stolen in Kumbotso. While CCTV footage aided the investigation, its premature release on social media alerted suspects who fled before arrest. The Commissioner of Police urged residents to report suspicious calls and evidence only through official channels. He warned that genuine religious messages will never demand money or personal data by phone.

How do you think fraudsters managed to convince people they were 'aljannu' on the phone?

What methods might they have used to mimic spiritual voices and scare callers into believing?

I doubt many truly thought callers were jinn. They probably fell prey to threats and confusion instead.

Recovering 28 SIM cards seems low for a large fraud syndicate impersonating spirits, suggesting the police might have found only a fraction of the network.

I'm not convinced arresting two suspects will stop spiritual extortion calls; these scams adapt quickly and usually resurface under a new identity.

Community members should verify unfamiliar phone callers claiming spiritual connections and report suspicious numbers promptly to help prevent future scams.
