US Merchant Ships Transit Strait of Hormuz Despite Iran’s Warning

Two American-flagged merchant vessels successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz under U.S. naval escort. This operation marks the opening phase of “Project Freedom,” President Trump’s plan to restore commercial shipping through the vital waterway, which Iran closed in February. Tensions remain high after Iran threatened to target U.S. forces in the strait. In a related incident, U.S. helicopters sank six Iranian small boats that were reportedly harassing civilian traffic. The United Arab Emirates condemned what it called “treacherous Iranian aggression” following a drone strike on an oil facility in Fujairah. Meanwhile, Iran’s semi-official media claimed to have hit a U.S. destroyer—an assertion U.S. Central Command has flatly denied.
