Lawyers Condemn YNW Melly’s Bond Denial, Cite Inhumane Solitary Confinement
Attorneys for Jamell Demons, known as YNW Melly, have criticised a court’s refusal to grant him bond ahead of his retrial on double murder charges. They say Melly has spent more than seven years in custody, including around three years in solitary confinement. The legal team describes his detention conditions as inhumane and unprecedented in their experience. The lawyers compared his treatment to a recent US court case where a magistrate apologised for solitary confinement in an attempted presidential shooting case. They note no similar concern has been shown for Melly’s prolonged isolation. YNW Melly is set for retrial in January 2027 over the 2018 shooting deaths of Christopher Thomas Jr. and Anthony Williams.
