UK Designates Iran’s IRGC as Security Threat and Bans Support
UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has used new powers to proscribe Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a threat to national security. Under the new rules, any support for the group—from expressing praise to providing assistance—can attract up to 14 years in prison. Two other organisations, the Islamic Movement of Companions of the Right and Russia’s GRU volunteer corps, have also been banned. The changes remove the requirement to prove a direct link to a foreign state. Police and intelligence agencies will gain wider powers to tackle espionage, sabotage and violent acts linked to these groups. Authorities say MI5 uncovered at least 20 potentially lethal Iranian-backed plots in the UK last year, including attacks on Jewish and Israeli community venues.
