Troost-Ekong Tried to Persuade Canada’s Promise David to Commit to Super Eagles

Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong revealed on SuperSports that he personally encouraged Ontario-born striker Promise David to choose Nigeria over Canada. David had featured for Nigeria’s U23s in a 2023 Olympic qualifier but later sought FIFA approval to represent his country of birth. He secured the change in February 2025 and has since impressed in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers for Canada, contributing goals and assists off the bench. Troost-Ekong praised David’s rapid rise and Nigerian heritage, saying, “I tried my best to convince him” to don the Super Eagles jersey. David also scored in Canada’s 2-1 defeat to Switzerland in their final group match, underscoring his immediate impact on the international stage.

It's interesting that David already played for Nigeria's U23s yet still considers a switch to Canada.

I doubt asking him to commit early is the best move when he's still developing his career abroad.

NFF and Troost-Ekong should focus on creating clear pathways and supporting young players' exposure in Nigeria's leagues.
