Why Peter Obi’s Call to Negotiate with Terrorists Threatens National Security
Peter Obi recently said he would negotiate with bandits willing to surrender while ordering decisive action against unrepentant insurgents. Though he rightly links terrorism to leadership failures and poverty, mass murderers cannot be rewarded with talks and amnesty. Nigeria’s own experience shows negotiation breeds betrayal. The 2025 Katsina amnesty deal collapsed when fighters returned to terrorise Dandume, Faskari, Funtua, Jibia and Kankara. Such pacts undermine victims and embolden criminals. True peace demands justice. Terrorists who slaughter villages, kidnap children and rape women deserve punishment, not compensation. History proves they only respect force, not persuasion. Nigeria needs overwhelming strength, better intelligence and well-equipped forces. Any peace built on appeasement is doomed. The state must protect citizens, punish criminals and uphold justice.
