Peter Obi Calls for Peaceful, Transparent Osun Governorship Election

Peter Obi has called on INEC, security agencies and political stakeholders to ensure that Osun State’s August 15 governorship election is peaceful, transparent and free from intimidation. He said Osun residents must be allowed to vote safely and have their votes counted and announced in line with their choice. Obi also urged security agencies to remain neutral and appealed to political actors, influencers and financiers to avoid actions that could fuel violence. The call comes amid concerns about election-related violence and vote buying. At least 73 election-related violent incidents were reportedly recorded in Osun between October 2025 and July 2026. INEC says it has stepped up security preparations and early-warning efforts ahead of the poll. Governor Ademola Adeleke is seeking re-election, while Bola Oyebamiji is the APC candidate. The ballot will also include SDP candidate Francis Olugbenga Ajala following INEC’s update to the candidate list.
