Defence Chief Urges Journalists to Uphold Truth and Unity at NUJ Easter Retreat
At the NUJ FCT Council Easter retreat themed “Resurrection Power: Grace, Faith, Hope and New Life,” Chief of Defence Staff General Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede urged journalists to uphold truth and professionalism. He said national unity and security depend on responsible information management as much as military efforts. He reaffirmed the armed forces’ commitment to combating terrorism, insurgency and banditry. Oluyede highlighted that today’s security battles are waged as much in the information domain as on the battlefield. He called on media professionals to prioritise accuracy and avoid reports that incite fear or division. He also asked Nigerians to support security agencies with timely information and honoured fallen soldiers, urging prayers for troops in operational theatres. Defence Minister Christopher Musa noted that ethical journalism promotes transparency, accountability and democratic governance. NUJ FCT Council Chair Comrade Grace Ike encouraged colleagues to renew their commitment to truth, integrity and unity. The retreat brought together media practitioners, security officials and other stakeholders to reflect on the press’s role in nation-building.
