Abuja Igbo Association Denounces Illegal ‘Ezeigbo’ Coronation in South Africa, Urges Arrests
The Abuja chapter of the Igbo Community Association has condemned the attempted coronation of an ‘Ezeigbo’ in South Africa. The group described the move as illegal and said it violates Igbo customs and established traditional institutions. In a statement made available to national media, President General Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe and Secretary General Emmanuel Chinwoke Onah warned that the event has already sparked near-xenophobic reactions in parts of South Africa. They argued the coronation risks the safety and reputation of Igbo people in the diaspora and undermines directives from the South East Traditional Council and Ohanaeze Ndigbo. The association called on Nigerian and international security agencies to halt further ceremonies abroad. They urged that anyone parading as an ‘Ezeigbo’ outside Nigeria should be arrested and prosecuted. The group stressed that preserving Igbo heritage requires respect for traditional authorities in the Southeast and the laws of host nations.
