Why Enugu’s Taps Run Dry in Some Areas and Flow Freely in Others
I grew up in Enugu and I know how unfair our water supply can be. In Uwani or near the Holy Ghost Cathedral, water flows like magic. But drive five minutes away and taps stay dry for days. People end up paying ₦35,000 for tanker water. This gap isn’t just inconvenient; it’s a massive drain on state revenue when one street has running taps and the next goes thirsty. Our ageing pipes, frequent power cuts and weak billing systems are the main bottlenecks. High-pressure water bursts 40-year-old asbestos mains before it reaches homes. Pumping uphill stops whenever the lights blink, locking air in the system. And with broken reticulation, the Water Corporation can’t meter usage or collect fees. The government should build mini-water schemes for neighbourhoods. Deploy digital sensors to spot leaks instantly. And partner with private firms for last-mile connections and billing. We need engineering discipline, not propaganda, to make the whole city flow like Uwani.
