Nigeria’s Hidden Bandits: From Armed Outlaws to Corrupt Officials
A recent US report estimates around 30,000 armed bandits terrorize remote villages in Nigeria. In reality, corruption and fraudulent practices suggest there may be over 90 million “bandits”. Many of these unarmed bandits occupy government offices, diverting millions meant for infrastructure and community development. Others peddle fake drugs and adulterated drinks, preying on public health. Extremist sympathizers and violent political activists further fuel instability. Should these groups acquire firearms, their impact could surpass that of the armed outlaws in the bush.
