Ijebu-Ode Gas Emissions Traced to Fault Line, Not Supernatural—Ogun Govt
The Ogun State Government says the recurring gas leaks in Ijebu-Ode come from natural underground fractures along the Ifewara-Zungeru Trans-Atlantic fault line, dismissing claims of supernatural causes. Commissioner for Environment Dr. Ola Oresanya explained that tests found methane and sulphide gases at affected sites. He noted that most of the impacted schools were built on land that was once forested and lay directly above the geological fault. Health Commissioner Dr. Tomi Coker urged residents not to panic, follow public health advice and cover their noses with a wet handkerchief instead of using face masks when emissions occur. She also reminded them to call the state health emergency line if they observe gas leaks or need medical help. Education and earth science officials assured parents and stakeholders that schools closed as a precaution will reopen once safety assessments are complete. Experts warned against borehole drilling and quarry blasting near the fault to avoid further instability.
