Fire Service Warns on Hidden Carbon Monoxide Dangers
The Federal Fire Service has issued an alert on carbon monoxide, a lethal gas that cannot be seen, smelled or tasted. It forms when petrol, diesel, kerosene, gas, charcoal, coal or firewood burn without enough air. Generators, gas cookers, charcoal stoves, kerosene heaters, industrial machines and vehicle exhausts are common sources of exposure. Inhaling carbon monoxide blocks oxygen from reaching vital organs like the brain, heart and lungs. Early symptoms—headache, dizziness, nausea, chest pain, blurred vision and unusual drowsiness—are often mistaken for malaria or food poisoning. Severe poisoning can cause organ failure, brain damage or death. To stay safe, place generators outdoors away from windows and doors, service fuel appliances regularly and ensure good ventilation. Install carbon monoxide detectors and move to fresh air immediately if poisoning is suspected. Contact the Federal Fire Service or the nearest station for emergencies.
