Former Borno Senatorial Aspirant Jailed 10 Years for Supplying Fuel to Insurgents

Former Borno Senatorial Aspirant Jailed 10 Years for Supplying Fuel to Insurgents

Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced Babagana Habeeb, a former Borno senatorial candidate, to 10 years’ imprisonment for aiding terrorism. Habeeb was convicted of supplying petroleum products to insurgents in the North-East. The Maiduguri-based fuel dealer pleaded guilty and asked for leniency. He explained that station attendants may have made the sales without his direct involvement. Habeeb noted he has two wives, six children, and has spent more than ten years in detention without contact with his family. The prosecution opposed the plea, arguing that the fuel enabled deadly attacks and displacement. It had urged a 20-year term. Justice Lifu found no evidence of Habeeb’s membership in or training by a terrorist group and acknowledged his prolonged pre-trial detention when setting the sentence. The judge ordered that Habeeb serve the term from the date of his arrest and be released immediately upon signing his release warrant to begin rehabilitation.

True, his sentence shows authorities are finally enforcing laws against those aiding insurgents financially.

It's striking that a former senatorial candidate would risk his reputation and freedom by aiding terrorism for profit.

I'm not sure ten years is enough given the broader security impact of fueling insurgent groups in that region.

Authorities should tighten fuel distribution oversight across conflict zones to prevent similar cases of resource diversion to insurgents.
