Sheikh Gumi Criticises Traoré Over Sharia Stance, Warns of Extremist Recruitment

Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has criticised Burkina Faso’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, over his reported stance on Sharia and secular governance. In a Facebook post, Gumi described Traoré as young and inexperienced, arguing that he does not fully understand the religious, social and geopolitical complexities involved. Gumi warned that an anti-Sharia position could be exploited by extremist groups to recruit supporters against Burkina Faso’s secular government. He said leadership decisions on religion and governance require a deeper grasp of the country’s social realities.
