Japa Dreams: My First Flight and New York Adventure
I grew up in Kaduna State but completed all my schooling in Lagos. After graduating from Lagos State University in 1998 with an Electrical Engineering degree, I joined a multinational firm on Victoria Island. Six months into my job, five colleagues and I boarded our first plane to attend a week-long training at the company’s New York headquarters. It was my first time in America and I was eager to learn. As the sessions began, I couldn’t stop planning my own “japa” escape. That dream hit a roadblock when one delegate went missing mid-week. Overnight, security tightened, our passports were collected and our stay was cut short. Next, I’ll share how I finally secured a green card with help from a Nigerian friend and her American partner.
