A Beggar Cursed at Me When I Declined Help: What Would You Do?
I was waiting outside my office for a dispatch rider when I saw a crowd gathering around two men. One was elderly and known as a corporate beggar. The other was a young man who had just crossed paths with him. According to the young man, he politely declined the beggar’s request for money. The beggar kept insisting and then began to curse him in Yoruba, thinking the man wouldn’t understand. That was when the young man lost his temper and dragged him. Some onlookers blamed the beggar, while older people said the young man should have walked away out of respect. I couldn’t stand by and watch that happen. I believe that wrong should be called out. If you were in his place, would you stay calm and walk away? Or would you confront the beggar as he did?
