Silence Is Loud: When a Teacher Refuses to Look Away from Bullying

Silence Is Loud: When a Teacher Refuses to Look Away from Bullying

When a bright secondary school student withdraws from life, one teacher refuses to stay silent. Abba T. Makama’s new film follows literature teacher Henrietta, a single mother, as she spots Ayo’s academic and emotional struggles. Their bond faces social stigma and tests the courage to speak up. Known for surreal satire in Green White Green and The Lost Okoroshi, Makama adopts a minimalist style in this collaboration with writers Taspy Gomwalk and Dika Ofoma. Silence Is Loud tackles themes of bullying, sex education, reproductive rights, and the coming-of-age experience. The cast features Uzoamaka Power, Sapphire Ekeng, Ozzy Agu, Judith Audu, and Kunle Akintunde. Produced by Osiris Film and Entertainment with Francis Nebot as executive producer, the film is now streaming on Zikoko’s YouTube channel.

Absolutely, her stand likely inspires Ayo to see school as a safer space and boosts his confidence in life.

It's interesting that the film highlights one teacher's role but doesn't show the school or parents stepping up to address Ayo's struggles.

I'm no sure say one teacher alone fit wrestle stigma from every angle.

Teachers should create clear reporting channels and peer support groups to catch signs of withdrawal before it's too late.
