Tyla’s A*POP is presented as an ambitious effort to broaden the idea of African pop by blending Amapiano, Afrobeats, R&B and global pop. The album follows the worldwide success of “Water” and arrives with the promise of a bolder new era for the South African star. Tyla sounds more assured throughout the project. Tracks such as “Is It Love,” “CHANEL,” “Kiss” and “She Did It Again” highlight her understated vocals, smooth melodies and ability to let African rhythms sit naturally beside pop production. Her collaborations also keep the album connected to its South African roots. However, the album often refines the sound Tyla established on her debut rather than fully reinventing it. Several slower songs feel too similar, and the writing does not always deliver the emotional depth or experimentation suggested by the A*POP concept.
