Nigerian Consulate Warns Citizens of Potential Anti-Foreigner Violence in South Africa

Nigerian Consulate Warns Citizens of Potential Anti-Foreigner Violence in South Africa

The Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg has urged caution as anti-foreigner protests turn violent across South Africa. Demonstrations have erupted in KuGompo (formerly East London), Cape Town, Durban and parts of KwaZulu-Natal. Some clashes have led to injuries, looting and property damage. Further rallies are expected in Gauteng Province between April 27 and 29. Nigerians are advised to avoid protest areas, follow local media updates and stay safe. Business owners should observe the public holiday on April 27 and consider closing shops on April 28 and 29 to reduce the risk of attacks on foreign-owned establishments.

These violent protests appear to be spreading quickly from KuGompo to Cape Town, signaling deep frustrations rather than isolated incidents.

I understand the warning, but this pattern of xenophobic protests has surfaced before during economic downturns in South Africa.

Consulate advisories aside, travelers should register with local community groups, avoid high-risk areas and stay updated through reliable news outlets.
